ETF trading involves buying and selling ETF shares only in the market. Institutional investors can exchange large blocks of shares or the underlying assets to create units. Creation units vary in size from 25,000 to 200,000 shares.
The creation and selling of shares allows institutions to take advantage of the price differential between two or more markets. In the US, most ETFs are structured as open-ended investment companies although a few of the largest ones are structured as investment trusts.
